WHY oranguta

What Sets This Studio Apart

A considered approach to watch repair and restoration — where the piece in front of you matters more than the queue behind it.

AT A GLANCE

Six Reasons to Choose the Bench

No Hidden Costs

A written estimate is prepared before any work starts. Nothing is added to the invoice without your knowledge and agreement.

Small Bench Volume

The studio deliberately limits how many pieces are accepted at one time. Each watch receives focused attention rather than being added to an overstretched queue.

Written Work Reports

Overhaul clients receive a written report at collection describing every component assessed, renewed, and timed. This document stays with the watch.

Direct Access

Questions go to the bench staff handling your piece, not a call centre or messaging relay. Communication remains clear and honest throughout the service period.

Preservation First

Surfaces, finishes, and original parts are preserved wherever practical. The studio does not treat wear as something to be erased; it is part of the piece's character.

Honest Turnaround Windows

Turnaround times are stated clearly at intake based on actual bench load. The studio does not make promises on timelines that cannot be kept.

IN DETAIL

Watchmaking Experience Behind Every Service

The principal watchmaker at oranguta has worked with mechanical movements for over fifteen years across independent studios in Kuala Lumpur and Penang before establishing the Melaka bench. This is not a background in retail watch servicing — it is a background in careful calibre work.

The technical knowledge required to overhaul a movement correctly — understanding of jewelling layout, mainspring specifications, position tolerance — comes from sustained practice. Owners entrusting pieces to the studio can expect work that reflects this depth.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOU

Calibre-specific lubrication decisions, not generic application
Timing adjustment measured across multiple positions, not just dial-up
Component renewal decisions made by the watchmaker, not a parts list
Accurate assessment of whether a service is within scope or not

THE INTAKE PROCESS

01Piece received and condition noted on intake card
02Service estimate prepared and shared for agreement
03Work commences only once owner confirms
04Any scope changes discussed before additional work proceeds
05Written report and piece returned at agreed collection

A Process That Keeps You Informed

The studio follows a structured intake process at every visit. The purpose is not bureaucratic — it is to ensure there are no surprises at collection. Each step is designed to maintain clear communication between the bench and the owner throughout the service period.

Equipment Suited to the Work

The bench holds a timing machine capable of measuring beat rate, amplitude, and beat error across watch positions. Ultrasonic cleaning equipment handles bracelet and case exterior work. A multi-stage watch cleaning machine processes movement components in calibre-appropriate fluids.

These tools are maintained regularly and are suited to the type of work the studio accepts. The studio does not use consumer-grade equipment for trade services.

HOW WE COMMUNICATE

You may reach the studio by phone during opening hours or by email at any time. Enquiries are answered by bench staff, not forwarded through an external service.

For pieces in care, any significant developments — such as the discovery of additional component wear — are communicated before any extra work proceeds.

Collection is by appointment or during standard opening hours. No piece leaves the studio without confirmation from the owner.

Direct, Unhurried Communication

Some repair counters are difficult to reach. Messages are not returned, or the person who answers cannot provide details about the work in progress. At oranguta, the people at the bench are the people who answer. This is not a feature — it is simply how a small studio operates when run with care.

Transparent Pricing for Each Service

The studio publishes its service prices openly: RM 165 for a cosmetic refresh, RM 980 for a complete calibre overhaul, and RM 380 for vintage bracelet repair. These prices reflect the time and attention each service requires.

Where parts replacement is needed beyond the standard scope, this is discussed and agreed before any additional charge is incurred. The total cost of a service is always known and agreed before work starts.

WHAT MAKES THE BENCH DISTINCTIVE

Not Found at Every Counter

Heritage Location, No Tourist Pricing

The studio is located in a heritage zone that draws both local collectors and international visitors. Pricing is set by the work, not the address. Melaka residents and travellers are quoted the same rate.

Period-Correct Bracelet Parts Inventory

For vintage bracelet repair, the studio maintains a small inventory of period-appropriate pins, links, and clasp hardware. Owners are not asked to source their own parts or accept mismatched replacements.

Postal Service Accepted

Owners outside Melaka may send pieces by registered post or courier. Prior contact is required so that intake can be arranged. The studio provides packaging guidance on request.

Defined Quiet Hours for Bench Work

The studio observes structured bench hours — periods without visitor interruption — to maintain the concentration that fine movement work requires. Appointments outside these windows are available for collection and consultations.
