Terms & Conditions
These terms govern the use of this website and the provision of watch repair and restoration services by oranguta. Please read them before submitting an enquiry or bringing a piece to the studio.
Effective Date: April 2025 · Last Updated: April 2025
1. Definitions
In these Terms and Conditions, the following terms have the meanings set out below:
- "Studio" / "We" / "Us" — oranguta, a watch repair workshop operating at 31 Lebuh China, 75200 Melaka, Malaysia.
- "Client" / "You" — the person submitting an enquiry through this website or bringing a piece to the studio for service.
- "Services" — watch cleaning and cosmetic refresh, complete calibre overhaul, and vintage bracelet repair, as described on this website.
- "Piece" — any watch, bracelet, or related item brought to or sent to the studio for a service.
- "Agreement" — these Terms and Conditions, read together with any written estimate or intake record provided by the studio.
- "Website" — the website accessible at oranguta.club.
2. Acceptance of Terms
By using this website, submitting an enquiry, or leaving a piece at the studio for service, you confirm that you have read and agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, please do not submit an enquiry or leave a piece for service.
You must be at least 18 years of age to use this website or engage services from the studio. By proceeding, you confirm that you have the legal capacity to enter into a binding agreement.
Where a piece is brought to the studio on behalf of another person (for example, as a gift arrangement), the individual presenting the piece accepts these Terms on behalf of the piece's owner.
3. Services Described
oranguta offers three bench services for mechanical wristwatches and vintage steel bracelets:
- Watch Cleaning & Cosmetic Refresh (RM 165) — external cleaning and light cosmetic work without opening the movement.
- Complete Calibre Overhaul (RM 980) — full disassembly, cleaning, lubrication, and timing adjustment of a mechanical movement.
- Vintage Bracelet Repair (RM 380) — pin replacement, link stabilisation, and clasp repair for vintage steel bracelets.
Prices shown are the standard bench rate. The studio will provide a written estimate before commencing any work that may vary from the standard rate. No work will begin until the client has confirmed acceptance of the estimate.
Services are available to clients visiting the studio in person and, where agreed in advance, to clients submitting pieces by postal or courier service.
4. Client Responsibilities
When submitting a piece for service, you agree to:
- Accurately describe any known issues, prior repairs, and the piece's service history
- Disclose whether the piece has any sentimental or monetary value that is relevant to the scope of work
- Collect or arrange return of the piece within 30 days of notification that work is complete
- Provide accurate contact details so the studio can reach you during the service period
- Not submit a piece that you do not own or are not authorised to present for repair
Pieces not collected within 60 days of completion notice may be placed into storage at the client's cost. The studio reserves the right to apply a reasonable storage fee after 60 days.
5. Intellectual Property
All content on this website — including text, photographs, layout, and graphic elements — is the property of oranguta or its content suppliers and is protected under applicable copyright law. You may not reproduce, copy, or redistribute website content without written permission.
The service reports and written records produced by the studio for each piece remain the property of oranguta. A copy is provided to the client at collection for their own reference.
6. Payment and Estimates
A written estimate will be provided before any service commences. Standard service prices are as listed on the website. Additional work identified during the service process will be quoted separately before proceeding.
Payment is due in full at the time of collection. The studio accepts payment in Malaysian Ringgit (RM) by cash or bank transfer.
If an estimate is declined after service work has commenced, a partial charge reflecting work carried out to that point may apply. This will be discussed with the client before any charges are confirmed.
The studio does not offer refunds on services once work has been completed and the piece has been collected. Concerns about completed work should be raised within 14 days of collection so that they can be reviewed.
7. Service-Specific Terms
Turnaround windows provided at intake are approximate. Mechanical work, especially on complex or unusual calibres, may take longer than initially indicated. The studio will communicate any significant changes to the expected completion date.
Parts and components replaced during an overhaul are selected for compatibility with the calibre. Where original manufacturer parts are not available, suitable period-appropriate alternatives may be used. This will be noted in the service report.
Vintage bracelets may contain components that cannot be sourced as direct replacements. The studio will inform the client if a component cannot be matched and will agree on an approach before proceeding.
Water resistance is not warranted following any service unless explicitly stated in the service record. Diver-style cases may receive a basic pressure check on supported designs; this does not constitute a depth-rated water resistance warranty.
8. Disclaimers
This website and the information contained within it are provided for general informational purposes. While we take care to ensure accuracy, the studio makes no representation that the information is complete or current at any particular time.
Watch repair and restoration involves working with aged mechanisms that may behave unpredictably. The studio applies care and skill to every piece, but cannot warrant a specific outcome in cases where a movement or component is beyond practical restoration.
The studio's assessment of a piece's condition at intake is provided in good faith and does not constitute a valuation. For insurance or market valuation purposes, clients should consult a qualified horological appraiser.
9. Limitation of Liability
To the extent permitted by Malaysian law, the studio's liability for any loss or damage arising from a service is limited to the amount paid for that service. This limitation applies whether the claim arises in contract, tort, or otherwise.
The studio will not be liable for indirect, consequential, or incidental losses, including loss of use or sentimental value. Nothing in this clause excludes liability for negligence causing personal injury or for fraudulent misrepresentation.
The studio carries appropriate workshop insurance. In the event of loss or accidental damage to a piece while in the studio's care, the matter will be dealt with fairly and in accordance with the studio's insurance arrangements.
10. Termination of Service Agreement
Either party may end a service arrangement before work commences without penalty. Once work has begun, the studio may charge for work completed to that point if the client requests the piece back before the service is finished.
The studio may decline to continue a service if conditions are discovered that make completion impractical or potentially harmful to the piece. In such cases, the studio will inform the client promptly and discuss available options.
11. Dispute Resolution
These Terms are governed by the laws of Malaysia. Any dispute arising from the use of this website or the provision of services should first be raised directly with the studio in writing, so that it can be considered and, where possible, resolved informally.
If a dispute cannot be resolved informally, it may be referred to the Tribunal for Consumer Claims Malaysia (Tribunal Tuntutan Pengguna Malaysia) where eligible, or to the courts of Malaysia. The parties agree to submit to the non-exclusive jurisdiction of the Malaysian courts.
12. General Provisions
- Entire agreement: These Terms, together with any written estimate or intake record, constitute the full agreement between the parties regarding the subject matter.
- Severability: If any provision of these Terms is found to be unenforceable, the remaining provisions continue in full force.
- Waiver: Failure by the studio to enforce any provision does not constitute a waiver of that provision.
- Assignment: The studio may assign its obligations under these Terms with reasonable notice. You may not assign your rights without written consent from the studio.
13. Changes to These Terms
The studio may revise these Terms from time to time. The current version, with its "Last Updated" date, will always be available on this website. Continued use of this website or submission of a piece for service after a revision constitutes acceptance of the updated Terms.
For significant changes, we will where practicable provide notice through a note on the website homepage for a reasonable period.
